In November of 2019, I attended a classical chamber ensemble performed by the Gewandhaus Woodwind Quintet. The evening was co-sponsored by several partners, including the Germanic-American Institute in St. Paul, Minnesota and Wunderbar Together (love this name), a Germany and American friendship organization.
I like cemeteries.
It’s Halloween 2019 as I write this. Pumpkins, corn stalks, skeletons, and cemetery displays are decorating the neighborhoods. I like cemeteries. Cemeteries can simultaneously comfort and creep out, be private and public, and be empty and full. They tend to be peaceful, and as a cousin of mine pointed out, the residents aren’t judging.

Minnesota State Parks--May in Maplewood.
Last winter during the third blizzard of the season, my cabin fever pushed me to purchase my state park pass early—the date was April 1st. Next, I decided it would be the summer to visit as many Minnesota state parks as possible.
In May, I visited Maplewood State Park which located in western MN and 40ish minutes East of Fargo, N.D. The trees overhead were full and healthy and mellowed the sunshine’s rays as I hiked on the North Country Trail, it didn’t rain, and the campgrounds were quiet. A good start towards my MN State Parks goal.
